The beautiful tower of Sankt Nikolaj kirke, Copenhagen (Denmark).

Nikolaj Art Gallery (Nikolaj Exhibition Hall) is an exhibition space for contemporary art in central Copenhagen. The building consists partly of the remains (the tower) of Sankt Nikolaj kirke (St. Nicholas Church).
The church was built in early thirteenth century and is the third oldest church in Copenhagen. A fire in 1795 burned down most of the building, and officially since 1805 was no longer a church.
Church ruins were demolished, while the sturdy tower is still standing. After the 1795 destruction the tower was used as a “fire lookout tower” with a watchman looking for any fires in the city.
The current spire is a modern reconstruction of the original, realized in 1909 at the initiative and expense of the brewer Carl Jacobsen.
The building, inaugurated in 1912, is a modern reconstruction, smaller in size, of the destroyed church, and the old tower has served as a naval museum and a library, among other things, before it got its present function of gallery for contemporary art.
