Wood, bricks and plaster

The colourful facades of Nyhavn, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Nyhavn (New Harbour) is a 17th century waterfront, canal and district in central Copenhagen, Denmark. Stretching from Kongens Nytorv (King’s Square) to the harbour front just south of the Royal Playhouse, it is lined vividly coloured 17th and early 18th century houses, bars, cafes and restaurants built with wood, bricks, and plaster. Serving as a heritage harbour, the canal has many historical wooden ships.

Absalon, Højbro Plads, Copenhagen (Denmark).

Absalon (1128-1201) was a Danish archbishop and statesman, who was the Bishop of Roskilde (1158-1192) and Archbishop of Lund (1178-1201). He was the most powerful politician of Denmark in the second half of the 12th century, and the first advisor of King Valdemar I of Denmark. He was a central figure in the Danish policies of expansion in the Baltic Sea, Europeanization in relationship with the Pope, and reform in the relation between the Church and the state.
Absalon was born into the powerful Hvide clan, and owned great land possessions. He was granted lands by the crown, and built the first fortification of the city that evolved into modern Copenhagen.
