Ruins (Thornton Abbey and Gatehouse, North Lincolnshire)

The ruins of Thornton Abbey and Gatehouse, North Lincolnshire (England, UK).

Thornton Abbey was a medieval abbey located close to the small North Lincolnshire village of Thornton Curtis.
It was founded as a priory in 1139 and raised to the status of Abbey in 1148. It was a house for Augustinian or black canons, who lived a communal life under the Rule of St Augustine but also undertook pastoral duties outside of the Abbey.
The abbey was closed in 1539 by Henry VIII as part of the dissolution.
The site is currently in the care of English Heritage and is open to the public.

Horizon

Horizon

The Solent, Cowes, Isle of Wight (England, UK).

The Solent is the strait that separates the Isle of Wight from the mainland of England. It is about 20 miles in length and about one to four miles wide.
The Solent is a major shipping route for passenger, freight and military vessels and an important recreational area for water sports, particularly yachting.
It is sheltered by the Isle of Wight and has a very complex tidal pattern, which has greatly benefited Southampton’s success as a port.
The area is of great ecological and landscape importance, particularly because of the coastal and estuarine habitats along the edge of the Solent.

Duncansby Head, Scotland

The wonderful nature, geology and wildlife of Duncansby Head, Scotland.

Duncansby Head, north east of Scotland, is the furthest point by road from Land’s End, the extreme point south-west of Britain, in Cornwall.
A little further across the clifftop fields, the stunning view south to Thirle Door and the Stacks of Duncansby: the first is a rocky arch, the second a group of large jagged sea stacks. The Great Stack is over 60 m high.
